Activity Breaks in the West Country

If you are looking for activity breaks in the West Country, then Somerset has every kind of activity on offer.

Somerset Tourist GuideSomerset has wonderful horse riding country and there are many establishments offering horse riding holidays catering for beginners to experienced riders, such as Periton Park near Minehead, where you can enjoy fabulous riding across Exmoor National Park. A number of establishments offer stabling for you to bring your own horse on holidays such as Thorney Farm Cottages in Langport, or The Crown Hotel in Exmoor National Park.

Somerset is also well suited to keen walkers and cyclists and offers every kind of landscape from the Levels in the center of the county, to the Mendip Hills in the north.

Attractions in Glastonbury

Cheddar, at the foot of the Mendip Hills, is home to the Cheddar Gorge which offers great rock climbing, caving, and abseiling. Introductory sessions are organized by Rock Sport on www.cheddarcaves.co.uk.

There are a number of outdoor activity centers in Somerset including Mill on The Brue Activity Centre in Bruton, and Countrywide Weekends near Wells. Here you can try your hand at everything from canoeing to archery. These centers also cater to school groups and team-building courses for employees.

If you are looking for creative activity breaks in the West Country, then Artbreaks offers painting courses for both beginners and more advanced painters. Accommodation and meals are also provided as well as visits to local villages and gardens in South Somerset. At Nut Tree Farm in Wedmore, you can enroll at the Melvin Firmager School of Woodturning where you can combine a holiday with improving your carpentry skills.

Somerset has many lakes. At Wimbleball Lake on Exmoor, you can participate in all kinds of watersports including canoeing, sailing, water skiing, and windsurfing. There are other lakes offering great fishing. At Folly Foot Fishery in North Petherton, you can enjoy a day’s carp fishing for just £10. If you would like to combine a camping trip with a spot of fishing then The Old Oaks Touring Park near Glastonbury has a half-acre pond well stocked with carp, roach, and tench, with great views of the Glastonbury Tor.
